Prestige classes

Once one's character reaches a level beyond 6th, one begins to have a feel for where one would like it to go. Even the most boring fighter may have a purpose beyond their formative levels which one might like to explore. This purpose can be achieved within the rules by switching to a new character class, the prestige class, which is only available for those who meet certain strict prerequisites. Usually these prestige classes combine traits of two other classes in the one character, along with special abilities unique to the class.

Often these prestige classes form a natural progression for multi-classed characters (such as the Wizard/rogue) to merge their current classes into a coherent pathway. In other cases they offer an opportunity for a character like the Bard or the Ranger to specialise in a particular area of expertise. Should the prestige class suit your character vision, and if you have the correct pre-requisites, it may enable you to develop your character without having to split it into multiple classes as you have done up until now.

A list of the most suitable prestige classes, with some of their properties, are described in the posts below. They are laid out according to their skill focus or the character class from which they most naturally follow. By looking up the skill focus or class background which suits you, you may find a prestige class you would like to follow. The posts are laid out in order as:

  • Archery-focussed classes
  • Bard-based classes
  • Cleric/rogue-based classes
  • Cleric-based classes
  • Combat-focussed classes
  • Druid-based classes
  • Monk/wizard or Fighter/wizard-based classes
  • Wizard/rogue or bard-based classes
Some of the rules and descriptions are not given in detail - only a general description is provided here. If you are interested, you should announce your intention before the next level you gain.
